STATEMENT
Ian Fenton makes large-scale collage works from hand-painted and cut paper that moves between painting and low relief. Built slowly by hand across surfaces that can reach two metres. A restrained palette of blues, sometimes interrupted by orange, has become a defining feature of the work.

At the heart of his practice is a particular quality of attention; slow, sustained, and devotional. The work is also a continuous material investigation into what paper and paint can hold. His pieces are acts of accumulated care; for colour, for literature, for the objects and memories that carry quiet meaning. The work rarely announces its emotional origins, but they are present in tones of blue that are always, somehow, insistent; in forms that emerge from personal loss and private fascination. The medium is the method: each work built by hand, cut by cut, until something private and fragmented becomes present and whole.
